Measuring length

As a part of Maths curriculum, units of measure are introduced, with the idea of moving on from direct comparisons of objects to the comparison of a single object to a number of equal units. Non- standard units are used to introduce the idea of a unit to measure with, such as cubes or pencils to measure the length of objects. This is an important step before introducing standard metric units, as it gives learners something familiar to measure with.

The students measure the length of ribbons using counters.

Counting back

Early subtraction involves partitioning and taking away objects. The basic idea is that there is a set of objects and an amount is taken away. The concept of ‘Counting Back’ was given through a number track. The students jumped on the track backwards after reading the given question.

Growing plants

The most practical way for learners to understand that some foods come from plants is for them to plant food that they can eat. As a part of Science curriculum, the students grew moong dal seeds. The students will observe the growth of their plant. We talked about what plants need to grow: warmth, water, something to grow in and on (soil). New vocabulary used- seed, grow, stem, leaves, roots.
